A multiplexer multiplexes several lines to one line. The term 'selector' would probably be more correct. (Only one of the inputs is connected to the output at any moment.) You can select one line out of a couple (2,4,8) of lines using a number of select lines, which is the 2log of the number of lines to choose from. So an 8 input to 2 output selector is probably a dual 4 to 1 multiplexer needing 2 select lines per unit. If the inputs were combined, it could also select independently 2 lines from 8 in which case there would be 2 sets of 3 select lines. In the case of the ls153, there are two 4 to 1 line selectors, but the select lines are combined, so in both of the two selectors the same numbered input channel is selected at any moment.
